For a rainy day: which foods can be stored for many months, and which ones are better to eat right away so as not to spoil

Despite the fact that we can go to the store at any time and purchase the necessary products, most people prefer to stock up on them for several months in advance. And this is not surprising, because the situation in the world is quite unstable, and it is not clear when the second wave of quarantine will be announced. Novate.ru decided to tell what food you can buy with a stock, and which one is better not to leave for a rainy day.

1. Condensed milk

Despite the fact that this product undergoes special processing before packing, during which microorganisms die, it can be stored for no more than a year. And we are not talking about any condensed milk, but only about that which is sold in cans. The product must be stored strictly at temperatures from 0 ° C to + 10 ° C. If you put it in the freezer, for example, or put it in a hot place, then sugar crystals will form on the surface.

Canned food is also not worth buying for a rainy day. Most of them are stored for no more than two years, with the only exceptions being cod liver and salmon, which can stand on the shelf of a kitchen cabinet for up to 30 months. It is necessary to store canned fish at temperatures from 0 to + 5˚С. If you smell an unpleasant smell when you open a tin can, notice the wateriness and flabby consistency of the fish, then the canned food has deteriorated. When choosing products, be sure to pay attention to the packaging: the jar should not be rusty or have dents.

Stew will last twice as long as canned fish. So, a product in sealed tin cans can stand in a locker for four years without deteriorating. Be sure to check the container for leaks by lowering it into a bucket of water and slightly pressing. If you notice air bubbles, then the stew cannot be stored. Examine the container carefully for rust: oxidation of the metal leads to deterioration of the product.

Interesting fact: The stew, which was produced at the first cannery in Russia, could be eaten even after a hundred years. At the Scientific Research Institute for Storage Problems of the Federal Reserve, and now there is a can of cabbage soup with meat and porridge. The date of manufacture is on the container: 1900. Stew is still edible, despite how many years have passed since its production.

4. Millet and semolina

Millet can be stored for no more than six months, since it contains a lot of fat. On contact with oxygen, it is oxidized, as a result of which the porridge becomes bitter. As for the decoy, it is also not far away. The shelf life of the unloved porridge of all children is no more than ten months. Nor should you expect much from oatmeal. The maximum shelf life they can offer you is four months.

5. Buckwheat, rice, pearl barley

These cereals may well be stored for a year and a half. To extend the shelf life, use the following life hack: heat the pan and pour the cereal onto a hot surface. After that, roll up the food in glass jars and put it in a cabinet or pantry. A pod of hot pepper, which must be placed in a container with cereals, can save polished rice from a musty smell and the appearance of insects. And for the same purposes, you can add bay leaves to buckwheat. Please note that brown rice, which is recommended for adherents of proper nutrition, can be stored for an average of six months, a maximum of eight months. After this time, it can be safely thrown away.

This product has a shelf life of 24 months. We recommend that you dry the peas immediately after purchase to prevent mold from forming. After that, you need to pour it into a glass jar and add a pinch of salt so that bugs do not start there. You need to store dried peas in a dark, dry place with a temperature not exceeding + 25 ° C.

If you plan to eat pasta on a rainy day, then buy products from durum wheat, they can be stored for up to four years. To avoid quick deterioration of the product, immediately after purchase, take them out of their original packaging and pour them into glass jars. As for ordinary pasta, their shelf life is no more than 12 months.

You don’t have to worry about this product for a long time. If stored in a dry, dark place, it will last up to eight years. However, it should be borne in mind that sugar has one unpleasant property: it quickly absorbs foreign odors. Therefore, make sure it is kept away from foods with intense aromas. Ideally, it should be stored in the same cupboard with flour or cereals.

But salt has no expiration date, it is an eternal product. However, if water gets into it, it will turn to stone. To protect the product from dampness, not only a properly chosen storage place will help, but also a few grains of rice placed inside the package.

Sausage cooked according to GOST can lie for three months if the temperature is from +12 to + 15˚С. However, this only applies to a whole stick of sausage. But the slices should be stored exclusively in the refrigerator. If you break its packaging, then you will need to eat the product within a few days. By the way, if you plan to store the sausage for a long time, grease the stick with vegetable oil so that it does not become too stiff.

14. Meat and fish

Store meat and fish in the freezer.

If you put meat in the freezer, then it can be stored there for about six months. However, there are a few subtleties here. Firstly, immediately after purchase, the meat must be washed and cut into portions. Please note that you need to act in this order, because if you cut unwashed meat, then all the dirt will be transferred to the cut, which will lead to contamination of the product with microbes. Do not freeze a large piece of meat, because each time you will have to completely defrost it in order to cut off the required portion.

Whole chicken and steak meat can last 12 months in the freezer. Frozen fatty fish will last about four months, lean fish about eight. And do not forget that all of these foods cannot be re-frozen. And before you put them in the refrigerator, you should think about high-quality packaging. If this is not done, the meat will become tough due to moisture loss.

15. Oil

Store butter in the freezer and sunflower oil in a dark place.

Butter is best stored in the freezer, which will allow it to last for four months. As for vegetable oil, its shelf life is one and a half years, but only if it is in an airtight container and stands in a dark, cool place where there is no access to the sun’s rays. But after opening the bottle, the shelf life of the oil is reduced to 60 days, after which it can no longer be used for cooking.

16. Tea and coffee

Depending on the variety and storage conditions, the shelf life of these drinks can vary from 12 to 36 months. To increase it, buy coffee beans and pour immediately into a jar that closes tightly. If you are a fan of ground coffee, remember that it cannot be stored for more than a year and a half. And then, only if the powder is poured into a special bag with a valve or an airtight container.
