Painter is a constellation located in the southern sky. From Latin “Pictor” is translated as “painter” and displays the artist’s easel.

The constellation Painter is easy to find, as it is located between Canopus and the Large Magellanic Cloud. In the 17th century, it was discovered by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille. The first name “Equuleus Pictoris” (Artist’s easel) was shortened to Painter.

History

The constellation has no mythological background. In 1756 he was found by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille and named “Chevalet et la Palette” – “easel and palette”. In 1763 he recorded it in the planetosphere as “Equuleus Pictoris”.

In 1845, Francis Bailey decided to keep only “Pictor” and wrote it in this form, referring to the proposal of the astronomer and mathematician John Herschel.

Alpha Pictoris is a white main sequence star (A8 Vn kA6) with an apparent visual magnitude of 3.27 (the first brightest in the constellation) and a distance of 97 light years. It can be seen with the naked eye. Age – 660 million years. It is a Lambda Bootes-type star (very low abundance of iron peaks in the surface layers). The rotation speed is 206 km / s, which is why it pushes the mass out of the outer atmosphere.

It covers 2.04 solar masses, 1.6 times its radius and 13 times brighter. This is a well-known X-ray source, hinting that we may have a spectroscopic binary system in front of us. For Mercury, it is the star of the South Pole.

Beta Painter is a main sequence white dwarf (A6 V) with an apparent visual magnitude of 3.861 (second in brightness) and a distance of 63.4 light years. It covers 1.7-1.8 solar masses and is 1.8 times larger in radius.

Located west of the star Canopus (Kiel). This is the Delta Shield variable (brightness changes due to radial and non-radial pulsations of the surface). There may be a large disk of dust in its orbit. It is possible that this is a protoplanetary disk with a gas giant (noticed in 2009) 8 times more in mass than Jupiter. Disc material is believed to be the main source of meteoroids in our system.

A bright member of the Beta Painter Moving Group of Stars (young stars with a common origin and movement in space). Includes 17 star systems (28 individual member stars).

Gamma Painter is an orange giant (K1III) with an apparent magnitude of 4.50 (the third brightest in the constellation) and a distance of 174 light years.

Delta Painter is a star (B3III) with an apparent visual magnitude of 4.72 and a distance of 1655 light years. This is the Beta Lyra variable (a nearby binary star whose changes in luminosity are explained by periodic blocking of components during rotation). The change in value is from 4.59 to 4.8 within 40.08 hours.

Kaptein’s star is a red dwarf (M1) with an apparent visual magnitude of 8.853 and a distance of 12.76 light years. It can be observed through a small telescope. It was discovered in 1898 by the Dutch astronomer Jacobus Kaptein.

It is a BY Dragon variable whose brightness changes due to magnetic activity in the chromosphere, as well as rotation. Part of the halo of the Milky Way.

At the time of discovery, the star had the highest proper motion – more than 8 arc seconds per year. But she gave up the primacy in 1916 when Barnard’s Star (Ophiuchus) was found.

About 10,800 years ago, it approached our system by 7 light years and has only been moving away since then. It is inferior to the Sun in temperature, occupies 0.274 masses and 0.291 radius.

Painter’s AB is an orange main sequence star (K2V) with an apparent visual magnitude of 9.16 and a distance of 148 light years. It is variable BY Dragon (brightness changes due to rotation and activity in the chromosphere).

In 2003-2004. an object with a mass 1.35 times that of Jupiter was found near it. It could be an exoplanet or a brown dwarf.

HD 40307 is an orange main sequence dwarf (K2.5 V) with a visual magnitude of 7.17 and a distance of 41.8 light years. Reaches 0.75 solar mass and 0.716 radius.

The star has 6 planets (3 were found in 2008 and 3 more in 2012). HD 40307 g is a super-earth (more massive than our planet, but less gas giants). It is located in the habitable zone and completes its orbit in 200 days.

HD 41004 is a multi-star system. The main object is an orange main sequence dwarf (K1 V) with an apparent magnitude of 8.65 and a distance of 138.6 light years.

In 2003, they found a planet with a mass 2.56 times that of Jupiter. It spends 963 days on the orbital path.

The second object is HD 41004. It is a red dwarf (M2V) with a visual magnitude of 12.33 and a distance of 140.35 light years. Orbits the star every 1.3283 days.

Celestial objects

NGC 1705 is a kind of lenticular galaxy with a visual magnitude of 12.8 and a distance of 17 million light years. This Compact Blue Dwarf contains large clusters of hot, young, very massive stars that give the galaxy a blue color. Included in the group of Dorado fish.

Painter A is a two-beam radio galaxy with a supermassive black hole at its center, which has a relativistic jet extending 800,000 light years into a bright X-ray hot spot (in the western part of the galaxy).

SPT-CL J0546-5345 is one of the most massive galaxy clusters found in the early Universe. Contains hundreds of galaxies. Located 7 billion light years away and found in 2008. If we could look at it in its current state, it would be 4 times larger. 7 billion years ago, it was similar in massiveness to the Hair of Veronica Cluster.
