Not all foods are as healthy as they seem at first glance.
The desire of many modern people is that only the most healthy and natural products appear on the table. In the grocery store, we are greeted by a wide variety of products, which only at first glance may seem impressive. However, not all products in retail outlets are of the proper quality and naturalness. Many of them go through multiple processing in order to increase their shelf life and taste more familiar. Even products that say they are completely natural are not always so.
It is better to drink natural coffee in Brazil. / Photo: miro.medium.com
Before the coffee is even roasted, it is fermented for flavoring and some layers of the beans are removed. According to Forbes, the more demanding the consumer becomes about coffee, the more producers process it. The fermentation process is used to change the flavor and body of the coffee. There is so-called natural coffee, it is simply left to dry and then exported. This is the same Brazilian coffee. But the washed and processed drink can ferment for a week and make coffee a ghostly natural product. Therefore, it is likely that your favorite bean varieties are actually provided with synthetic caffeine. At the same time, manufacturers are not at all obliged to indicate this on the packaging.
Natural milk is not bought at the store. / Photo: delo.ua
Naturally, for long-term storage, milk must be processed and pasteurized to make it safe for consumption. However, after numerous alterations, practically nothing remains of the naturalness of the product. After the milk enters the processing plant from the dairy, all types of milk, even those used to make cheese or yoghurt, are passed through a separator. This removes excess components and sediment and also removes all fat. After that, the milk is converted into skim milk, and then the required amount of fat is added to it, depending on the percentage on the future packaging.
The fat content in natural milk varies greatly and depends on everything: from the season, from the climate, from the feed and the breed of cow from which it is obtained. Removing all the fat, then adding it back and mixing thoroughly so that it does not delaminate is the only way to get a homogeneous product.
In the store, the wrong bees make the wrong honey. / Photo: agropolit.com
Honey is a very healthy and tasty product that heals the body and strengthens the immune system. However, in the store, it is often not sold natural, but processed. Many foods are pollen free. In addition, some manufacturers even add sugar syrup to honey in order to increase its volume and provide themselves with more profit. To get a truly natural product, you need to carefully study the composition or buy honey in an apiary, from those who are professionally breeding bees.
4. Olive oil

Olive oil is a very popular product, but this popularity often comes with extra money. According to Forbes, olive oil has been the most adulterated food for years, starting at least in 1980. A 2011 Olive Center study found that top brands lacked a truly natural product 73% of the time. In 2014, 95 counterfeit olive oils were seized in Italy alone. Most often, under the guise of natural olive oil, a product is sold with a small content of natural olive oil with a large amount of refined olive oil from pomace and lower quality oils. The inclusion of such components as wax, sterol and alcohol in the product also does not add naturalness.
Sugar should be chosen wisely. / Photo: proshokolad.com
Natural sugar is found in fruits and vegetables. In addition, vitamins and fiber enter the body with it, due to which sugar is absorbed much faster and better. Refined sugar – even though it comes from natural products such as sugar beets and sugar cane – is not only highly processed, but also an industrial version of fructose and glucose, extracted and combined to form sucrose. This is a completely different product, which can be considered natural with a big stretch, which is why the body reacts to it in a completely different and unnatural way.
You shouldn’t buy low fat yogurt, even for weight loss. / Photo: upload.wikimedia.org
According to Los Angeles Magazine, the yogurt industry is a huge chasm, with many companies competing to come up with the most daring combinations, tastes and names. Of course, there is classic Greek yogurt, but there is also farmed, low-fat, Icelandic and many other variations, and everyone chooses the most suitable one for himself. That said, not all yoghurts are made the same, some are more natural than others. Fortunately, there are some simple life hacks to help you choose the product that suits you best. First, look for high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors and colors. If they are, then the yogurt is definitely not natural. Low-fat yogurt is clearly not a healthy product either. It is always better to choose plain yogurt than fat-free yogurt, because at least it is good for the body.
Helpful Information: Manufacturers add more sugar and less nutrients such as protein and vitamins to low-fat versions of yogurt.
Peaches are delicious, but mostly unnatural. / Photo: 24tv.ua
None of the types of this fruit that are currently on the market have appeared naturally. James Kennedy, professor of chemistry at the Haileybury Institute in Australia, studied exactly what a 100 percent natural peach should look like. There were only three varieties of peaches in their natural, pre-domesticated form, and they were all found in China. Around 4000 BC Chinese farmers began selective cultivation of peaches, collecting trees with the largest and sweetest fruits for cultivation. An all-natural peach has 64% edible pulp compared to 90% of our modern peaches. Over the course of time, more than 200 separate species of larger, juicy and sweet peaches have been bred by selection, which have become much better than those that were created by nature.
